After a career spent in Germany, France and Turkey, Michael Thompson will play in the VTB United League for the first time in his career after signing with BC Astana in Kazakhstan. The 31-year-old point guard spent the past two seasons playing for teams in France's LNB Pro A, suiting up for Le Mans Sarthe Basket during the 2018/19 season before playing for BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque last season.
Thompson averaged 9.9 points and and 5.7 assists per game for Gravelines, though he couldn't help save Gravelines from finishing toward the bottom of the league standings. He joins an Astana team that will look to take the next step in the VTB United League after going 7-11 before the 2019/20 season came to a close due to the coronavirus pandemic. The team also competes in Kazakhstan's National League.
